Boğaziçi University Solar Tower Renovation Project
The solar tower renovation project is one of our most important projects that will add value and meaning to Kandilli Campus that we created together with Boğaziçi University. Built in the 1970s to meet the requirements of the period, the solar tower is equipped with advanced technological tools of the period and has served Kandilli Campus and our country for many years.
The modernization of the campus area was essential as new technology and devices were brought. The tower wasn't in use for last years. The environment where the tower is located influenced the idea of the project a lot. We made it in accordance with wind and sun analysis. Besides, by addition new areas and zones, the tower building became more functional. Despite renovation, we also decided to keep some old parts where it was possible in order to show the connection between past and present. What else inspired us was the interaction between the natural envrionment and the Observatory Tower. Wood and glass were used in the additional structure, and polycarbonate material was used in the tower itself to keep transparency at the forefront. Above the tower, in the dome selected for the telescope viewing area, our high-priority task was to keep the harmony between the sky and the structure.
We used natural materials in the design of the interior in order to preserve and highlight the existing structure, compatible with the exterior. To meet students' and visitors' needs we planned exhibition and museum areas, created for the presentation of the Observatory. Moreover, we designed a cafeteria, a recreation, a mini-library and a book sales area. The idea of the whole project is to reflect a modern face of the campus.
